Plastic State of Mind

The power of music and comedy (and a heck of a social media boost) can go a long way…

When it debuted, Plastic State of Mind (commissioned by Green Sangha) quickly became a viral hit. It was featured on the front page of YouTube twelve times over the course of six months. To this day, citizens all over the world are using it as a creative tool to pressure policymakers into banning ultra-light plastic bags.

Shortly after the video was released, we got an email about this video; half way around the world, an Australian coastal town did a flash mob dance to wake up their town to the problem of plastic bag use in their town.

The stories of how people are using it are inspiring; here’s one of our favorite:

It’s awesome! High school kids love it and it has a great impact. Beth (Terry) came and spoke to our whole school and she showed the video… I also invited two art teachers from Reno to work on our project and they saw the video. They are now going to do a whole unit, maybe even semester, on our human footprint. They plan to use your video as an introduction to the unit…

The custodian watched it and it really had an impact on him. He changed what his custodial staff did everyday by not changing out the garbage bags unless they were full… (he’s) saving hundreds of bags needlessly going into the landfills. I wish everyone would watch this video!

Additionally, I brought our foot sculpture to Truckee recently to influence a vote at their Town Hall meeting. They proposed to ban plastic bags in their town (they go through 4-5 million plastic bags a year). So many people spoke in favor of it, including me. Now the proposal is expected to pass on November 25th! If only we could get that to happen in Reno. It’s so bad there. Urban tumbleweed. Thanks for making this video! – Ann C.

Teaching Tool

The film has been shown at assemblies across the US and Europe, but this special in-person performance was a reward for students at Dover Elementary who had been studying a curriculum centered around Plastic State of Mind. Before and after the performance, the students mobbed Jenni and AshEl, crying out for autographs and begging to show off all they had learned about plastics. Enjoy the show, as the kids did.

Shoulda brought your own bag
Yeah but you forgot it though
You were busy dreamin of ice cream and
all that cookie dough

Your life is wrapped in plastic
Convenience is your motto
But plastic addiction’s worse
than they want you to know

BP’s oil spill
Almost like we did it -
We use one million grocery-bags
every single minute

Recycling them’s a joke yo
That baggie don’t go anywhere
It turns to little pieces
and then it spreads over everywhere

Into your food supply
Into your blood supply
Not to mention birds and fish and
Cuties you don’t wanna die

Just look at baby Sammy
Dioxins in its milky way,
cuz even her breast milk it’s got

OK now you get it
How you gonna stop it though
Banning Single Use Plastic Bags
is the way to go!

Join other states and cities
Kick the nasty habit
Tell your representatives
Ban single-use bags made from

Fossil product all your crap’s made of
There’s one thing we can do
Ban bags made of plastic
Skip the bag, the cup and spork dude
Convenience will kill you
Ban single use plastic toxic bags

Sustainably we go forth and save our cities
Bringing your own bag and forks and bottles should be easy
But corporations selling toxins bought the government
Stand together for yourself, your kids, the planet sayin’

Yeah, yeah,
Ban single-use bags made of

Fossil product all your crap’s made of
There’s one thing we can do
Ban bags made of plastic

Bring your own don’t you forget dude
And let your reps know too
Ban single use plastic toxic bags!
